For the Presentation Day
Reach Early!
It would be best if a vacant room is assigned to you so that you can be ready before the students come in. Otherwise, request a time right after lunch/recess/elective so that you can prepare the room when the children are not in their classroom.
You can
- put up the selected posters.
- set the Sound Vision Ramadan Song at beginning.
- place the items for display on a table.
- place a basket with candies/cookies/dates at the Door Entrance.
- Copies of handouts of text and quizzes for each child.
Presentation:
As the students come in at the scheduled time, offer the snack and after they are seated, start your presentation.
- Introduce yourself and what they can call you.
- Start by explaining who you are and what religion you follow and that how it is related to the other main religions.
- Explain what Ramadan is and what we do in that month. See handout.
- Explain on the white board what do we mean by a lunar year and why is it 11 days shorter than the regular year. You may draw two horizontal lines on the board with 12 equal marks representing the months (remember to make one of them a little shorter to show the difference) or you may draw two circles.
- Pass around the picture of the Crescent. Explain how to sight the new moon. Encourage them to ask questions.
- You can also describe in your own words about your culture and how you celebrate it.
- You can also briefly introduce the "Eid" holiday and how it is celebrated at the end of Ramdhan(new clothes, special prayers, gifts, fun food, etc).
- Pass out the handouts and give them few minutes to read and then ask them to do the quiz at the end. allow them to look back.
- Then, you can start the date finding activity. Pass out the handout of one month calendar with the month of Ramadan displayed. Explain to them that if Sept 25 was the first of Ramadan, find out today’s date. They should write 25 in the box which says 1st (of Ramadan) and then 28 in the box that says 2 and so on until they reach the day of the Presentation.
- Other activities, if planned, can be done now like, coloring or crossword, etc.
- Another optional activity is writing their names in Arabic text. You can pass out the cards (blank or bordered business cards/index cards) and ask them to write their first names on the back. Collect them all and then take home to write in a beautiful and neat handwriting with a color marker in Arabic on the front and send back with your child the next day to school. (Don't forget to include the teacher in this activity.)
- Last but no the least, play the sound vision song about the Holy month of Ramadan. Thank everyone, etc.
- Don't forget to send a Thank you letter to the teacher.
May Allah accept our efforts!
