Your Introduction:

As you may already know that I am the mother (/father) of ____________ and we are Muslims. We follow the religion called Islam. We believe that there is no god except Allah, the only God who created us all.

By the way, sometimes people mispronounce it , therefore please remember that it is called : Issslam, the ‘s’ sound is not the ‘z’ sound, like in ‘boss’ or ‘soup’. Similarly, the word ‘Muslim’ has an ‘sss’ sound, not ‘zzz’ as in ‘Puss (in Boots).

One of the special days that we observe as Muslims is the month of fasting. It is called Ramadan.

In this month everyone, except small children and sick people, fasts from dawn to dusk. Fasting means that we do not eat or drink anything during that time. We wake up really, really early in the morning before dawn (which is like around 5 am these days) to eat and drink before starting our fast. And then we cannot eat the whole day until after sunset. At this time we break our fast by eating and drinking and doing prayers.

Instead of getting cranky, we are supposed to be more patient and tolerant.

Three Main Religions:

Islam is the most recent of the three main religions of the world: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. We have a common forefather, Abraham, Peace be upon hum, and these religions were sent down by the same One God of the Universe.

Ninth Month:

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic Calendar. Islamic Calendar is different from the Gregorian calendar since it is based on the lunar year.

Lunar means related to ‘Moon’.

It has 12 lunar months, which unlike the regular months (January or March) have either 29 or 30 days.

It is not the same every year. Any month may either be 29 days or 30 days depending upon the sighting of the New Moon.

Therefore, total number of days in a linar year would be 354 (eleven days short of the solar year). Due to this reason , the lunar year starts sooner every solar year and it moves through all the seasons.
